Pavana Dam Reaches Full Capacity; Flood Alert Issued for Residents Along Pawana River
Pimpri, July 25, 2026: The Pawana Dam, located at Pawananagar in Maval taluka of Pune district, has reached 100% of its storage capacity following continuous heavy rainfall across the catchment area. As water levels continue to rise due to persistent monsoon showers, authorities have started releasing water from the dam into the Pawana River to regulate the reservoir level and ensure the safety of the dam.
According to officials, the controlled release of water began on Friday morning with an initial discharge of 800 cusecs through the hydroelectric power station. The outflow is being increased gradually and is expected to reach 9,000 cusecs by 7:00 PM, depending on the inflow received from upstream regions. The release is a precautionary measure to prevent excess pressure on the dam as heavy rains continue over the Western Ghats and the surrounding catchment areas.
The increased discharge has significantly raised the water level in the Pawana River, causing it to flow at a much higher level than usual. In several stretches, the river has overflowed its banks, creating flood-like conditions. As a result, the administration has issued an alert to residents living near the riverbanks in Pimpri-Chinchwad and nearby villages.
